We eat to be nourished. To provide what we need for good health. While we may focus on eating to nourish our hearts, muscles, and mind, we also eat to nourish our skin. The skin is our largest organ, one that protects us from dangers in the environment, helps our bodies regulate temperature, and can reveal underlying health issues. Eating for health is a whole-body investment! Here is how eating well affects the skin:

  • Drink plenty of water.

Water hydrates our bodies, helping our circulation, aiding digestion, and reducing muscle fatigue. In addition, staying hydrated will help your skin stay hydrated. Hydrated skin is generally more elastic, less itchy, and looks better!

  • Enjoy healthy fats.

Our bodies need fat to function, and healthy fats – specifically omega-3 fatty acids – are associated with reduced inflammation. For your skin, this means reduced cellular damage and dryness.

  • Choose a variety of fruits and vegetables.

Vitamins A and C can be found in dark leafy greens, broccoli, bell peppers, cantaloupe, strawberries, and citrus fruits. Both vitamins A and C are antioxidants, helping to protect your cells against damage. For your skin, this means healthier and smoother skin.

  • Avoid sugar.

We know sugar is bad for your teeth, but it also increases inflammation, which breaks down collagen in your skin, causing wrinkles and sagging. Eliminating or reducing sugar can help clear up blemishes and make your skin appear brighter.

In general, if a food has a healthy effect on your body, it will benefit your skin! Choose whole foods, drink plenty of water, and avoid excess sugar. Your body and skin will be nourished, working well and looking their best!
